Following an internal audit conducted after post-publication quality concerns were raised, the Editorial Office identified reference inconsistencies in the above article. The authors have confirmed the following corrections, none of which alter the experimental dataset, numerical results, tables, figures, statistical outcomes, or the principal conclusions of the study.
Reference corrections
- Refs. [7] and [9] The published reference list contained a duplication and numbering inconsistency in this section. References [7] and [9] were incorrectly identical, citing the same article unrelated to the statements supported by these citations. The reference list has been corrected to restore consistency between the in-text citations and the reference list. Ref. [7] has been replaced with De Clerck et al. (2004), which supports the use of bacterial identification and characterization approaches. Ref. [9], cited in the text as Cheng et al., has been corrected to Cheng et al. (2019), which corresponds to the intended study on microbial communities in biofilms.
- Ref. [28] The original citation (Suzuki et al.) did not appropriately support the statement regarding microbial community-mediated degradation of organic pollutants in sewage treatment systems. This reference has been replaced with Nandikes et al. (2024), which directly addresses microbial degradation of organic pollutants in a microbial fuel cell context and supports the associated statement.
